Our History

Better Living first opened its doors in Omaha, Nebraska in 1994 by Terry and Sharon Thompson as a counseling group working mostly with the mental health needs of individual clients on an outpatient basis. In 2000, Better Living added Family Support and Supervised Visitation services to families in Omaha and surrounding communities. Better living recognized the need for services that didn’t discriminate against clients based upon race, age, gender, sexual orientation, ability to speak English, education level and financial status. So Better Living began to develop a service array that considered the needs of all youth and families living in the communities served.

In 2006, Terry and Sharon joined with their daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Mike Betzold, to expand services for families and children in need. Foster Care and prevention services were added as the company expanded to serve the Nebraska municipalities and surrounding rural areas.

Better Living currently helps thousands of families and individuals willing to make a positive change. This is accomplished through the facilitation of the following services: Family Support, Supervised Visitation, In Home Safety, Day/Evening Reporting, Drug Test Screening, Intensive Family Preservation, Intensive Family Reunification, Individual and Family Therapy, and Foster Care.

Beginning in 2019, Better Living embarked on the path towards accreditation through CARF. Better Living has made many improvements in policies and practices as well as work with youth and families by utilizing a more individualized and collaborative approach that promotes family and youth engagement for better outcomes.
